Billy Joe Browns, 73, of Conrad, passed away at his home on January 31, 2013. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, February 7, 2013, at First Presbyterian Church, in Conrad. Visitation will be 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 6, 2013, at the Conrad Chapel of the Anderson Funeral Homes. Interment will be at Conrad Cemetery.
Billy was born November 21, 1939 on Donkey Ridge outside of Murray, IA to Richard A. and Opal G. Browns. He graduated from Murray High and entered the U.S. Navy working as a Navy engineman, serving 4 years. He worked for Kiowa in Marshalltown as a setup man and he married Martha (Coil) December 28, 1968. They made their home in LeGrand, IA. To this union were born 4 children. He began his career as a machinist for the Chicago Northwestern railroad in 1970. He retired from the Union Pacific Railroad, where he spent his final 7 years working in Kansas City. Billy Joe and Martha retired to Conrad in 2002 to be closer to family.
Billy was an avid sports fan, following the Iowa Hawkeyes, Green Bay Packers, Chicago Cubs, and Boston Celtics. He enjoyed fishing, being outdoors, working on vehicles, volunteering for the Le Grand Fire Department, and being a neighbor to all he encountered. He was a man who loved people and life and especially enjoyed time with his grandchildren. He also was happy when many children called him Santa Claus during any time of the year. His long beard and twinkling blue eyes will be remembered by all who knew him.
Billy Joe was preceded in death by both his parents, brothers Bob and Jay, brother-in-law Arvid, and sisters-in-law Jeanne and Marge. He is survived, loved and remembered by his wife of 44 years, Martha, children: Jen (Rod) Hoveland of rural Beaman, Rita (Tony) Vis of Cedar Rapids, Megan (Joey) Candillo of Kansas City, MO, and Joel (Kristen) Browns of Grundy Center; sister Shirley Scadden, brothers: Jim (Mildred), Darrel, Dick (Carol), Jack (Joan), sisters-in-law: Anna, Ellen, Ruth (Jerry) Kinney, grandchildren: Brandon, (Brooke), Brianna, Caitlyn, Mariah, Ethan, Mason, Ashley, Kaity, Maleah, Emma, Elianna, Josiah, Grace, Madison and Jaxon, as well as other neices, nephews, relatives and friends.
