Ernest Becker Rites Thursday, Jan. 29th

Services will be Thursday for Ernest Becker, age 73, who passed away at his home Tuesday, January 27th. Services will be at the Engelkes-Abels funeral home in Grundy Center at 2 p.m. Burial in the Beckman Mausoleum at Rose Hill cemetery in Grundy Center. Rev. John L. Lewis of the First Presbyterian Church will be in charge of the services. There will be military rites by the Grundy Center American Legion at the cemetery.

He was born March 8, 1896, in ?, the son of Ben and Mary Becker. In September 1917 he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served as a private with the 331st Regiment Field Artillery, until January 9, 1918, when he was discharged.

For many years he was a chauffer and mechanic and was employed by the Schnathorst Trucking Company of Marshalltown.

He was married to VerDene Beckman on May 15, 1948, at the First Presbyterian Church in Marshalltown. They lived in Grundy Center where he worked with the city police force for about 14 years.

Survivors are his widow, and two daughters, Ramona (Mrs. Ray Yamburra) of Pebble Beach, Florida, and Leora Jane (Mrs. Leo Fenzel) of Dubuque, Iowa; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and one grandchild.
