Saturday Rites For Everett Thoren

Funeral services were held last Saturday for Everett Thoren, 69, Grundy Center, who passed away Thursday morning, Jan. 8, at the Grundy County Memorial hospital. Death was attributed to cancer.

The service was at 2 o'clock in the Bethany Presbyterian church with Rev. Calvin Vanderwerf officiating. Burial was in Rose Hill cemetery. Casketbearers were Wendell Byrnes, Frank Mamminga, Ubbie Petersen, Jr., Larry Hansen, Fred Finke and Dick Arends.

Everett was born July 19, 1900 in Grundy Center the son of Abram and Anna Bleeker Thoren. He attended the Grundy Center schools. On Dec. 5, 1922 he was united in marriage to Edna Slifer at Marshalltown. He had been a resident of Grundy Center all of his life.

Everett operated the Shell Service station in Grundy Center several years, was employed at the Municipal Light and Power plant, Iowa State Liquor Store, and in late years worked for Ubbie Petersen, and also was a painter and decorator.

His wife, Edna, died June 5, 1968 at Denver, Colo. He is survived by one foster daughter, Mrs. Richard (Kay) VanHorn of Washburn, Iowa and four grandchildren; also 8 brothers and three sisters. They are Robert of Cedar Falls, Ray of Holland, Harold of Dysart, Russell of Vinton and George, Albert, Lee and LeRoy of Grundy Center; sisters, Mrs. Tillie Buchan of Waterloo, Mrs. Leo (Dorothy) Weigand of Iowa City and Mrs. Kenneth (Margaret) Bowers of Grundy Center.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, four sisters and one brother.

The Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
