Rites Held For Mrs. G. Behrens

Mrs. Gertrude Behrens, of Detroit Lakes, MN, and formerly of Grundy Center, passed away on Saturday, September 2, at the Emmanual Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes, MN. She attained the age of 79.

Funeral services were held at the United Methodist Church in Grundy Center, on Wednesday, September 6, at 10:30 a.m. Pastor D. Ward Young officiated.

Mrs. Wayne Halstead sang "Amazing Grace," "In The Garden," and "Take My Hand, Precious Lord." The accompanist was Mrs. Jack Stumberg, who also provided numbers for the prelude and postlude.

Casket bearers were Charles Riek, Eugene Plager, Clarence Miller, Robert Chabel, Fred Becker and Larry Teske. Honorary casket bearers were Leonard Thompson and Dale Mossman.

Ushers were Roger Peters and Donald Palmer. Shirley Peters and Frances Sievert were in charge of the floral arrangements.

Interment was in the Hillcrest Cemetery, rural Cedar Falls.

Gertrude M. Behrens was born February 3, 1910, at Atlantic, the daughter of Marcus B. and Mary Warren Nelson. She grew up in Atlantic and attended school there. She later attended Simpson College in Indianola where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority. She graduated from Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls in June of 1933.

On December 25, 1933, she was united in marriage to Milton R. (Deac) Behrens at the United Methodist Church in Cedar Falls by the Rev. H. W. Siefkes. They moved to Grundy Center in 1939. She taught Phys-Ed at the Grundy Center High School in 1945, and worked as a proofreader at the Spokesman Press in Grundy Center for many years.

She was a long time member of the United Methodist church and a life member of the WSCS. Gertrude was also a member of the Music Club and the Woman's Club, and also served as a Girl Scout leader and a Cub Scout den mother while living in Grundy Center.

Gertrude's husband "Deac" passed away March 15, 1982. In January of 1987, she moved to Bemidji, MN, to live with her son. In December of 1988, she became a resident of the Emmanual Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes, MN, because of the effects of a stroke and Alzheimer's disease.

Gertrude was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and two brothers.

She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Michael (Bette) Wammer, of Audubon, MN; one son William M. Behrens, of Bemidji, MN; four grandchildren, Steven, Todd, Brett and Susan; and one brother Warren Nelson, of Venice, FL.

A memorial fund has been established.

The Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center was in charge of the funeral arrangements.
