Rites Held For Clara DeVries

Mrs. Elky (Clara) DeVries, 73, of rural Grundy Center, passed away Sunday, August 20, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City. She had been a patient there since July 16, when she submitted to aneurysm surgery.

Funeral services were held at the Bethany Presbyterian Church, Grundy Center, on Wednesday, August 23, at 1:30 p.m. The Rev. Calvin Vanderwerf officiated.

Marvin Aalderks sang "One Day At A Time," and "Where The Roses Never Fade." He was accompanied by Rosie Aalderks. Dorothea Appel played selected numbers for the prelude and postlude.

Casket bearers were Joel DeVries, James Marks, John Marks, Darren Hurt, Bill Saak, Rick Saak, Ron Saak and Gary Saak.

Ushers were Edward Flater, Dale Meester and Lloyd Dreesman. Mrs. Art Henze and Mrs. Vernon Kruger were in charge of the floral arrangements.

Honorary flower ladies were Jane Hurt and Teri Saak.

Interment was in Rose Hill Cemetery, Grundy Center.

Clara DeVries was born March 14, 1916, in Pleasant Valley Township, Grundy county, the daughter of Ayelt and Trientje Westerman Krull. She attended country school near her home.

On April 16, 1936, Clara was united in marriage to Elky DeVries at the Pleasant Valley Reformed Church parsonage, rural Parkersburg, by Rev. D. Siemsen. On April 16th of this year, they celebrated 53 years of marriage. They farmed all their married life, and semi-retired, but continued to live on the farm near Grundy Center.

Clara was an active member of the Bethany Presbyterian Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Mrs. Andrew (Dena) Kruger, and Mrs. Henry (Albertha) Pauk.

Clara is survived by her husband, Elky; one daughter and son-in-law Lillian and Edward Marks, Dike; one son and daughter-in-law Eldon and Geri DeVries, Grundy Center; nine grandchildren and spouses James and Paula Marks, John and Karen Marks, Jane and Darren Hurt, Joel DeVries, Bill and Sindy Saak, Rick, Ron, Gary and Teri Saak, and by seven great-grandchildren, Evan, Ehren, Christopher and Stephanie Marks, Lauren Hurt, and Robbie and Katie Saak; three sisters, Mrs. Thomas F. (Margaret) Meester, rural Holland, Mrs. Jake B. (Anna) Lindaman, Wellsburg, Mrs. John J. (Trena) Schipper, Aplington; and by one brother, Ayelt Krull, Jr., of Clarksville.

A memorial fund has been established.

The Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center was in charge of the funeral arrangements.
