Services Held For Wilhelmina Stohr

Wilhelmina Stohr, 79, passed away January 24 at the Sunnyview Care Center, Ankeny. She was a former Wellsburg resident.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, January 27, at the Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center, with Pastor Paul Nelson, of the American Lutheran Church of Grundy Center officiating.

Interment was held in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery, rural Wellsburg.

Wilhelmina Stohr was born December 16, 1909, in Wellsburg, the daughter of Wilhelm and Tetta Goudschaal Stohr. She was the youngest of 13 children. Wilhelmina graduated from the Wellsburg High School and later from Gates Business College in Waterloo. She then accepted a position as stenographer with the Federal Old Age Benefits Social Security Board in Baltimore, MD, in 1937. She was one of the initial workers in setting up the social security system.

In 1942, she was reassigned by the federal government to the Naval Personnel Division and served as a clerk for the War Department in Ft. Logan, CO. She resigned from government work in 1945, and moved to Des Moines, to serve as the secretary for the Claims Division of United States Fidelity and Guarantee Company until her retirement in 1976.

She was an active member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, and the Lutheran Hospital Volunteers in Des Moines, and a member of the National Secretaries Association.

Wilhelmina was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, one sister, and by eight half brothers and sisters.

She is survived by two sisters, Annette Emma Grimmius, and Johanna T. Grimmius, both of Grundy Center; and by several nieces and nephews.

A memorial fund had been established.

The Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center was in charge of the arrangements.
