Services Held For Agnes Alexander

Agnes "Toddle" Alexander, 86, died Sunday, Jan. 15, at Marshalltown Medical & Surgical Center where she was admitted earlier in the day.

Born March 29, 1902, in Eldora, she was the daughter of Robert and Minnie Lettow Todd. She graduated from high school in Eldora and from Grinnell College in 1923. She came to Conrad in 1923 as a high school English teacher and taught until 1935 after which time she served as a substitute for many years. She taught at Whitten in 1952-53.

In 1974 she was presented with a plaque by the Conrad High School Alumni Association in appreciation of one "whose life has influenced not only C.H.S. Alumni, but an entire community."

As a teacher she was very interested in the necessity of a library for the community and was instrumental in its establishment, being named to the first library committee in 1936 by the Conrad Woman's Club, the sponsoring organization. She was named as one of the members of the permanent library committee on policy and planning. She served continuously on the board of trustees through 1985 and was presented with the Outstanding Trustee Award by the Iowa Library Trustee Association in 1985.

She was a member of the Conrad United Methodist Church and its United Methodist Women, having been a charter member of the WSCS; St. Elmo Chapter O.E.S. where she received her 50-year pin in 1973, and its Past Matrons Club; Conrad American Legion Auxiliary of which she was historian for many years; Conrad Woman's Club, Questers Club, former member of Tuesday Musical Club, Grundy County Historical Society and Iowa Historical Society and other organizations.

On Dec. 8, 1923, she was married to J. F. Alexander at Sheffield. He preceded her in death in 1968.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Sharon Alexander, and granddaughter, Kathy Alexander, Carlisle.

Other than her husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, and grandson, John Todd Alexander.

Funeral services were scheduled for Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 18, at the Conrad United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Crow officiating. Organist was Evelyn Davidson. Casket bearers were Richard Bockes, Roger Bockes, Tom Anderson, Steve Anderson, Paul Franzenburg and Richard J. Gallentine. Flower bearers were Dorothy King and Phyllis Pies. Burial was in Conrad Cemetery.

Memorials may be directed to "Toddle's Corner" at the Conrad Public Library.

Johnston Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
