Rites Held For Lizzie Abbas, 85

Lizzie Abbas, 85, passed away Friday afternoon, January 13, at the Maple Manor Nursing Home in Aplington.

Funeral services were held 10:30 a.m. Monday, January 16, at the First Reformed Church of Aplington, with Rev. James Lemmenes, officiating.

Lois Wessels was the organist, and the men's quartet of Rodney Wessels, Tony Poppens, Lee Schipper, and Ralph Wessels, sang "Going Down The Valley," and "Rock of Ages."

Casket bearers were Elvin Wiese, Alvin Bulten, Bob Poppens, Rudolf Sents, Fred Johnson, and Rodney Sents.

Interment followed in the Ackley Christian Reformed Cemetery, rural Ackley.

Lizzie Bunk Abbas was born April 24, 1903, in the Netherlands, to Abbe and Aaltje Swartz Bunk. At the age of 10, she came to America. She attended school at Kanawha for three years, and then came to Aplington to work 12 years for George A. Abbas.

On February 22, 1929, Lizzie married Arend G. Abbas, and they farmed southwest of Aplington. Arend died March 25, 1944. Lizzie continued to live on the farm until 1961, when she moved to Parkersburg.

In 1968, she moved to Aplington, where she lived until becoming a resident of Maple Manor in February, 1986.

Lizzie was a member of the First Reformed Church of Aplington.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Arend; two brothers, Lucas Bunk and Dick Bunk; three sisters, Gepke Mein, Gertie Abbas, and her twin, Minnie Verbrugge.

Lizzie is survived by two daughters, Nellie Arlene Abbas, Aplington, and Adeline Ruth Gruis, of Clara City, MN; one son, George Alvin Abbas, rural Aplington; seven grandchildren, and four great-grandsons.

Schwartz-Engelkes Funeral Chapel of Aplington was in charge of the arrangements.
