Mrs. J. Akkerman Dies At Home Thur.

Mrs. John Akkerman died at her home a half-mile west of Fern at 4 o'clock Thursday morning. She had been afflicted with cancer during the past four years, and was bedfast during the last three weeks of her life. She died in the home where she was born.

The body was taken to the Engelkes funeral home at Parkersburg where funeral arrangements were made. Services were held on Saturday afternoon at the Reformed church two miles west of Fern. The service was conducted by Rev. Gerald Osland. Burial was in the cemetery adjoining the church.

Mrs. Akkerman's maiden name was Elva Engelkes. She was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. B. Engelkes. She was born Nov. 23, 1919, attended rural school at Fern until she passed the 8th grade, after which she attended high school at Parkersburg. Following her graduation from high school she attended State Teachers College at Cedar Falls for a year. Following her college course she taught rural schools in Colfax and Pleasant Valley townships for three years.

Elva Engelkes and John Akkerman were married Sept. 11, 1941, and resided during all of their married life on the farm west of Fern.

Mrs. Akkerman was held in high regard by all who knew her and there was deep regret at her passing.

She was a member of the Pleasant Valley Reformed church and also of the Ladies' Guild of that church.

Surviving are the husband, a son Dale and a daughter Berdell, both of whom are at home. Other surviving relatives are her father, E. B. Engelkes of Stout, and her stepmother and a stepbrother, Rodney Kendrick, Stout.
