Herman Lumken Dies In Home

Herman Lumken, 84, who had been a resident of Grundy county for 61 years, passed away Saturday, Nov. 13, at the Maple Manor Nursing Home at Aplington. Death was due to cancer of the liver. He had lived at the Nursing Home since last March. Prior to that time he had been confined in the Allen Memorial hospital for about four months.

Funeral services were held at the Engelkes Funeral Home in Parkersburg at 1:15 p.m. Wednesday and later at the Stout Reformed church. Rev. J. H. Hoekstra officiated. Burial was in the Stout cemetery.

Mr. Lumken was born in Buhren, Germany, June 3, 1881. He came to the United States in 1904 alone. He worked for Heye Ellingrod for three years. He was married to Minnie Tammen in 1907. They moved onto a farm in Beaver township after their marriage and Mr. Lumken had farmed there ever since. His wife died in 1954.

The deceased is survived by a foster son, Warren Elston, on the home place, and by several nieces and nephews in Germany. He was preceded in death by his wife and a daughter in infancy.

Mr. Lumken made many trips back to his homeland, the last one being in 1964.
