E. W. Martz Dies Thursday After A Long Illness

E. W. Martz died at his home in Grundy Center Thursday afternoon following an illness of about a year from cancer of the liver. He had been confined to his bed for several months before the end came.

Mr. Martz was 63 years old. All excepting the first year of his life was spent in Grundy county. He was born at Greene, Iowa, and came here with his parents when he was a year old. The family made their business as well as supplying the local trade.

Following his marriage to Jessie May Dunsmore, Oct. 18, 1899, Mr. Martz came to Grundy Center and opened up a seed business, which he continued up to the time that ill health made it impossible to give any personal attention to business. He did an extensive mail order seed business as well as supply the local trade.

Mr. Martz was affiliated with the Odd Fellows lodge at Grundy Center during the greater part of his active life and for 20 years he was secretary of the local organization. He was also a member of the Rebekah and of the Yeoman lodges in Grundy Center.

Surviving relatives are the wife and one son, Forrest Winfield. Other relatives are three sisters and one brother. The sisters are Mrs. R. W. Mumper, Donna, Texas; Mrs. J. F. Stevens, Grundy Center, and Mrs. Bessie Keller from Dodge, N.D. The one brother, Clyde, resides on the home farm in Grundy county. The deceased's father, J. R. Martz, died at Grundy Center last March.

Funeral services were held at the home Sunday afternoon. Rev. J. B. Bird, pastor of the Methodist church conducted the services, assisted by the Odd Fellows. Burial was in the Grundy Center cemetery. Six of his lodge brothers were pallbearers.

Relatives and friends from out of town attending the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. John Lighter and daughter Elma of Conrad, Mr. and Mrs. L. T. Dixon and son Floyd; Mr. and Mrs. Floyd McElvanious, all of Iowa Falls; Mr. and Mrs. M. Brewer and two daughters of Malcium, Ia.; Mr. and Mrs. Ben Brewer and Howard, Everly, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Elliott and daughter Esther, Waterloo; Mr. and Mrs. Carpenter, Iowa Falls.
