Mrs. Lucy Taft Died Wednesday At Advanced Age

Came to Grundy Center as a Bride 57 Years Ago; Was Sick But a Few Weeks

Mrs. Lucy Taft died at her home in Grundy Center this morning following a short illness. Two weeks ago she suffered a stroke of paralysis that disabled her right side and affected her speech. Her condition gradually became weaker from the time she was stricken until the end came.

Mrs. Taft was 87 years old. She came to Grundy Center 57 years ago as a bride. She was born in Montague, Mass., where she grew to womanhood and where she was married. Her maiden name was Lucy Saxton. Shortly after her marriage to Edwin O. Taft she and her husband came to Iowa. That was in the summer of 1875. Mr. Taft died 25 years ago. Mrs. Taft continued to make her home here until she went to live with her daughter, Mrs. C. W. Boardman, in Minneapolis about 14 years ago. She remained there most of the time until the death of her daughter, after which she returned to the old home in Grundy Center again.

Mr. and Mrs. Taft had three children, Fred from Cresco, Iowa, Raymond from Grundy Center, and Mrs. Exene Boardman, who passed away two years ago.

Funeral arrangements await word from a former Presbyterian pastor, Rev. E. E. Hastings of Joliet, Ill., whom the family wish to officiate at the funeral service. Burial will be by the side of the husband in the Grundy Center cemetery.
