Ann Cowie, Oldest Grundy Resident, Died Saturday

Miss Ann Cowie, oldest resident of Grundy Center, who had made her home here for sixty years, died from infirmities of old age last Saturday. She was 95 years old. While she retained her full mental faculties to the end, for a number of years she was unable to walk due to an accident which resulted in injuries from which in her advanced years she was unable to recover.

Funeral services were held at her home Monday afternoon. The services were in charge of her pastor, Rev. J. B. Bird. Mrs. H. L. Nickerson sang "Saved by Grace" and "Rock of Ages."

Miss Cowie was born near Montrose, Forfarshire, Scotland, August 24, 1837. She was one of eight children, of whom only one, John Cowie of Cedar Falls, survives. In the year 1868 she made the journey from Scotland to Pecatonica, Winnebago county, Ill. In 1872 she accompanied Mrs. Desmarias, her sister, and the Desmarias family to Grundy Center, making her home with her two brothers and sisters till she came to live in her own house in this city in 1884.

Of near relatives, beside the one brother, she leaves a number of nephews and nieces in Scotland and America.

Miss Cowie became a member of the Presbyterian church early in life, and since coming to America has been a member of the Methodist Episcopal church. She was a devout Christian woman, and maintained till the very end her custom of reading a portion of the Bible as the last act of each day; and till about last Christmas was a regular attendant at the church whose services she loved.

Relatives from a distance who attended the funeral were Miss Alice Cowie, Mr. and Mrs. George Cowie and family and Mrs. Margaret Cowie and family.
