3 Yr. Old Child Crushed By A Load Of Grain

Joan Dinnibier Killed When She Fell Under Wheel of Loaded Grain Wagon Thursday Afternoon

Joan Dinnibier, the three year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Dinnibier was crushed to death when she fell under the wheel of a loaded wagon of oats last Thursday afternoon at the William Hartman farm five miles southwest of Grundy Center.

A threshing machine was in operation at the Hartman farm. Mr. Hartman was hauling a wagon loaded with threshed oats from the machine. He saw the child by the side of the wagon. She evidently attempted to climb up on the box as the wagon started and was thrown to the ground. One of the rear wheels of the wagon ran over her chest and right shoulder. The chest was crushed in. No one saw the child fall under the wheel but she was discovered as soon as the wagon had passed over her. She was brought to a doctor's office in town at once but the spark of life had gone out before she reached here. Death is believed to have been instantaneous. Mr. Hartman brought the child in and took the body home again. Later it was returned here to the Coffman mortuary, and on Friday afternoon to the home. On Saturday the body was taken to the home of the mother's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Westergaard, at Reinbeck, where funeral services were held Saturday afternoon.

Mrs. Dinnibier, the child's mother, was helping Mrs. Hartman cooking while the threshers were at the place and the little girl had been playing about the yard. There is no blame attached to any one for the tragic accident which the entire neighborhood regret so deeply. The parents have the united sympathy of everyone in the community.

Joan was the only child of Mr. and Mrs. Dinnibier. She was 3 years old on the 16th of July. Her parents are employed on the Robert Sharp farm where they have been making their home during the past five years.
