Mathias Hummel Former Grundy Merchant, Dead

Mathias Hummel died at his home in Grundy Center last Thursday afternoon following an illness of a year from diabetes. His condition did not take a serious turn until two weeks before his death, when he was compelled to take to his bed.

Had Mr. Hummel lived until the 20th of next month he would have been 75 years old. The major part of his life was spent in Grundy county. He came here 56 years ago and resided at Grundy Center continually.

Mr. Hummel was born in Baden, Germany, January 20th, 1857. He came to this country when he was 19 years old. For a number of years he was employed as clerk in his cousin's store in Waterloo. He came to Grundy Center in 1876 and was employed as clerk --unreadable-- with his brother Alois in the drug and grocery business. He disposed of his business interests 16 years ago and lived in retirement since that time.

Everyone who knew Mat Hummel liked him and trusted him. He followed the rule through his life that if there was nothing good he could say of anyone, that he would say nothing at all.

Surviving are the wife who was his daily companion and helpmate for forty years, one sister, Mrs. Frank Schwab from Finchford, Iowa, three nephews, Joseph Hummel from Grundy Center, Dr. A. T. Hummel from Dyersville, and Charles Hummel from Cedar Rapids.

Funeral services conducted by Rev. Father P. J. Boyle were held in the Catholic church in Grundy Center Monday. Burial was in the Catholic cemetery.
