Early Grundy Resident Dies At Austin, Minn.

Mrs. Amanda Swancer Came to Grundy Co. Shortly After Civil War

Mrs. Amanda Swancer who came to Grundy county two years after the close of the Civil war, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. F. C. Sheldon, at Austin, Minn., last Sunday following an illness of ten weeks.

Services were held at the Jordan Funeral Chapel at Austin, Minn., at 8 p.m. Monday, and the Methodist Episcopal church at Conrad, Iowa, Mar. 17. The services here were conducted by Rev. Warner Johnson of Austin and by Rev. C. K. Hudson of Conrad.

Amanda Baltimore was born Feb. 14, 1848, at Savanna, Missouri, and died at 4:20 p.m. Sunday, March 15, 1931, at the age of 83 years, 1 month and 1 day.

Orphaned at the early age of 7 years, she was taken by relatives to Oxford, Ill., where she grew to young womanhood and taught school for a time. Soon after the close of the Civil war she was united to John Swancer, a returned veteran, and two years later the young couple, in company with others, moved to Grundy county, Iowa, to conquer the virgin prairies of the region.

Her husband preceded her in death, having passed away in 1907.

Two children were born to them, Willie, who died in 1884, and Mae, now Mrs. F. C. Sheldon, the only surviving of the immediate family, who with the three children and two great-grandchildren remain to cherish her memory and mourn her departure.

Mrs. Swancer was of the early pioneer stock--thrifty and energetic. A good neighbor, ever ready to lend a helping hand in sickness or trouble. She was always interested in the church work and other agencies for the upbuilding of the community and the advancement of Christ's Kingdom on earth. Her life's interests were centered in the home. She was a loving and faithful wife and mother. She has not lived in vain.

The burial was in the Beaman cemetery.
