Goke Poppen, Old Colfax Resident, Died Friday
Goke Poppen, a resident of northern Colfax township for the past fifty-five years, died unexpectedly at his farm home shortly after noon Friday. Death is attributed to old age. He apparently was in his usual good health until the time of his death, and was seated in his chair following the dinner hour when he quietly passed away. He was aged 81 years and three months.
Mr. Poppen was born October 10, 1849, in Ostfriesland, Germany. When he was 18 years of age he emigrated to America, locating at Forreston, Illinois. He was united in marriage to Miss Anna Poppen at Freeport, March 8, 1875. Shortly after their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Poppen came to Grundy county, making their home on a farm in Colfax township, where they have resided continuously since.
Those of the immediate family who are left to mourn the loss of their husband and father are the widow and the following children: Mrs. Lena Kessler, of Holland; Mrs. Annie Sonnenberg, Holland; Mrs. Kate Arends, Stout; Adam Poppen, Holland; Rev. Otto Poppen, of Belmond, Iowa; and a foster-daughter, Mrs. Frances Kline, of Stout.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Siemsen church, conducted by the pastor. Burial was in the Siemsen church cemetery.
