Blood Poison Causes Death Of Old Settler
John Peters Died On Sunday Following Short Sickness
Blood poison resulted in the death of John Peters at his home in Colfax township at 9:30 Sunday morning. Eight days before his death while cutting up meat Mr. Peters scratched one of his hands with a butcher knife. The wound didn't amount to anything but then after it was made infection set in and two days later Mr. Peters was a very sick man. He continued to get worse until the end came.
Mr. Peters will be buried this afternoon. Funeral services are being held at the Rev. Siemsen church west of Fern of which church Mr. Peters was for many years a prominent member.
Mr. Peters was one of this county's early settlers. He came here with his parents forty-four years ago and the family located on a farm in Colfax township. They were a thrifty family and they prospered. Mr. Peters was born in Pogum, Eastfriesland, Germany 63 years ago the 7th of last October. He and his family moved from the old country to Freeport, Ill., when John was sixteen years old. Three years later they came to Grundy county. John remained at home until he was married thirty-three years ago. He and his young wife began housekeeping on a farm in Colfax township and that has been their home all of these years. Mr. and Mrs. Peters' union was blessed with twelve children, ten of whom are living. The living children are Heite, Mrs. Tom Meester, Mrs. J. Meester, George, Henry, Dena, Mary, Alfred, Jake and John. These together with the mother have the sympathy of all who know them in their deep bereavement.
Mr. Peters was one of our rugged, honest and thrifty German farmers who like many like him had much to do with making Grundy the best farming county in Iowa. He was a good citizen, a good neighbor and a considerate and loving father and husband. In his death Grundy county loses a man who we needed and wanted among us.
