In 1932 his father died and in 1935 his mother and Wayne moved to Cedar Falls. He graduated from Teachers College High School in Cedar Falls in 1937. In 1943 he joined the Army Engineers in the U.S. Army where he was stationed in the Philippine Islands to help rebuild Manila. After returning from the military he worked for S&S Firestone in Cedar Falls and New Hampton, until 1952 and his family moved to Grundy Center where he bought the Firestone business. In 1964 he sold the business and became the sales manager for Grundy County R.E.C. His wife, Marjorie died March 21, 1973 and he was united in marriage to Kathryn Sparenborg on July 6, 1974. His hobbies were golf, hunting, fishing, gardening, camping, watching sporting events, and in his retirement years spending his winters in Texas. One of his greatest joys was spending time with family ? he loved each and every one of them with all his heart.
