George D. Potts, 78, of Grundy Center, Iowa, died Monday, February 14, 2005, at Grundy County Memorial Hospital-Long Term Care Unit in Grundy Center, Iowa, from carcinoma, while under the care of Cedar Valley Hospice. Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M., Thursday, February 17, 2005, at First Presbyterian Church in Grundy Center, with Pastor Daniel C. Graham officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Grundy Center, Iowa, with full military rites provided by Grundy Center AMVETS Post #17 American Legion Post #349 and Hudson AMVETS Post #82. Visitation will be Wednesday, February 16, 2005, from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center. Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice-Grundy Center, First Presbyterian Church in Grundy Center, or to the Grundy County Memorial Hospital.

George was born November 9, 1926, in Oelwein, Iowa, the son of Clark and Leota (Kunkle) Potts. George lived in Oelwein until the age of sixteen, when he moved to Waterloo. George graduated from East High School in Waterloo, and ten days after graduating from high school, George enlisted into the United States Air Force on June 19, 1945, at Fort Snelling in Minnesota. George served his country during WWII and was honorably discharged on December 9, 1946, at Camp Beale in California. In 1947, George was united in marriage to Norma Fossler, and they were later divorced. On March 5, 1977, George was united in marriage to Dorothy "Dot" Bishop at First Presbyterian Church in Cedar Falls, Iowa. After their marriage, they lived in Cedar Falls and in 1978, they moved to Grundy Center. Over the years, George owned several businesses in Waterloo, Hudson, and Grundy Center. George also drove a bulk tank and hauled milk for Carnation and the Hudson Creamery for many years. George was a lifetime member of AMVETS Post #82 in Hudson, Iowa, and a fifty-year member of the American Legion in Waterloo.

He is survived by his wife Dorothy Potts of Grundy Center, Iowa, eight children: daughter Carolyn Clausman and her husband Alan of Waterloo, Iowa; son George Potts of Washburn, Iowa; daughter Erlene Rhoades and her husband Jeff of Hudson, Iowa; daughter Renesh Johns and her husband Keith of Cedar Falls, Iowa; daughter Lori Abernathy of Marshalltown, Iowa; son Jeffrey Potts of Tampa, Florida; daughter Kelly Bevard and her husband Martin of Hudson, Iowa; and son James Potts and his wife Stephanie of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; sixteen grandchildren; and ten great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents and one grandson Scott Rhoades.
