Margaretha DeBoer Stumberg
(By Dr. K. J. Stratemeier)

Mrs. Stumberg was born August 9, 1852, in Emden, Eastfriesland, Germany. She came to America in 1883, resided in Grundy county ever since and during the last 16 years in Grundy Center. In 1876 she was united in marriage to Seben Stumberg to which union were born six girls and three boys. One girl and one boy died in infancy. The remaining children are Jacob Stumberg, Mrs. Henry Johnson, Mrs. Ella Arends, Joe Stumberg, Mrs. Wm. Springer, Mrs. John DeBerg, Mrs. Roy Purvis. The husband and father passed away in 1908. There are mourning her departure also one brother, Jacob DeBoer, one sister, Mrs. R. Siefken, 22 grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.

While advancing years, the last fourteen of which she spent being cared for by her children brought increased feebleness, she kept up quite well until recently. On September 23rd this year she suffered a stroke from which she never rallied. Though tenderly cared for, her strength began to fail visibly. Nothing helped her so much during these months than the ministry of the Word of God. Though she was unable to speak, the light in her eyes clearly revealed the gladness of heart and peace of soul found in the comfort of Scripture and Christian hymns. She walked with the Lord before; He did not fail her now.

On May 27, 1917, she was received on confession of faith into the membership of the First German Presbyterian church of Grundy Center. She was a member of the Ladies' Aid of that church. Hers was a living faith expressed in frequent praise for the redemption she had experienced. In that faith she fell asleep at seven o'clock Friday, November 22, 1929, attaining unto the age of 77 years, 3 months and 13 days.

Funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 25, 1929. The ministers Rev. H. F. Sinning and Rev. K. J. Stratemeier brought messages of consolation, based upon John 11:25 and Psalm 119:105.
