Grandma Hummel Passes Away

Had Been a Resident of Grundy Center Since 1882

Caroline Hummel was born in Baden, Germany, Nov. 13th, 1840, and passed away at 3:30 a.m. on Feb. 8th, 1929, aged 88 years, 2 months and 25 days.

She was married to Andrew Hummel in Baden, Germany, in 1858, and came to America with her family Aug. 16th, 1874, and located first at Cedar Falls. In 1879 the family moved to Parkersburg and two years later (1881) they removed to Steamboat Rock and later to Morrison, Iowa, where the husband died Nov. 25th, 1882.

After the death of the husband and father, Mrs. Hummel came to Grundy Center to live with the oldest daughter, Mrs. A. Hummel, and it was at the latter's home that she passed away.

Eight children were born to this union, three in Germany, Barbara, Fannie and Charles, and live in this county, Joseph, Andrew, Alois, Rose and Emma. The three latter died in infancy. Fannie died twenty-eight years ago, and Charles passed away fifteen years ago. Those children living are Mrs. A. Hummel and J. F. Hummel, of this city, and Dr. A. T. Hummel, of Dyersville, Iowa. There are also ten living grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Grandma Hummel was a kind and loving mother, a good neighbor and will be greatly missed by those who have known and loved her affectionately for many years. She was a faithful member of the Catholic church and always attended the services of that church whenever she was able to do so.

Funeral services were held from Sacred Heart church of Grundy Center at 9:30 Monday morning, Feb. 11th, Rev. Father Boyle officiating. Interment was in the Catholic cemetery just west of town.

Those relatives and friends from a distance attending the funeral were Dr. and Mrs. A. Hummel, Rosemary and Gilbert, of Dyersville; Chas. Hummel, Chicago; Mrs. Frank Schwab, Sr., Mrs. Frank Schwab, Jr., Mr. Neal Wallace, New Hartford; Mrs. Wm. Gutknecht, Mrs. Alford Gutknecht, Cedar Falls; --unreadable--.
