Levi Kauffman Died Friday

Was a Resident of Grundy County For 57 Years

Levi Kauffman died at his home near Whitten last Friday from infirmities of old age. Funeral services were held at the home at 1:30 Sunday afternoon and later at the Methodist church at Whitten. The remains were laid to rest in the Benson cemetery near Whitten.

Mr. Kauffman was one of the oldest residents of Grundy county. He came here 57 years ago and during all of that time made his home on a farm in Felix township. Mr. Kauffman was a high minded citizen and a good friend and neighbor to the many people with whom he came in contact during his long lifetime.

He was born in Reading, Pa., March 28, 1844, and came to Iowa in 1855 with his parents, who settled in Jackson county. He was married to Miss Katherine Forney, at Maquoketa, Nov. 10, 1869. Mrs. Kauffman died in 1923.

Mr. and Mrs. Kauffman came to Grundy county in 1871, Mr. Kauffman purchasing a tract of prairie land near Whitten, where he made his home continuously until his death.

He is survived by five children, O. M. Kauffman, Campbell, Minn.; Dr. I. D. Kauffman, State Center; Mrs. Edna Meyers, Plainfield and Mrs. Mabel Olmstead and Ralph Kauffman, Whitten; a brother, James Kauffman, Long Beach, Calif., and four grandchildren. A son, Wayne Kauffman, died in 1918, while serving in the navy.

Mr. Kauffman had been a carpenter by trade and erected all the buildings on his farm. He had been a member of the Methodist church since 1870.
