John VanderWerf Dies at Hospital

John VanderWerf died at the hospital at Marshalltown at about noon last Monday. Intestinal tumor was the cause of his death. He went to the hospital on Wednesday of last week. The hospital surgeon after making a diagnosis of his case decided it best to postpone the operation for a few weeks until the patient became stronger. His case was regarded as critical by the examining surgeon. He had been troubled for many years with indigestion.

The remains were taken to the home in Melrose township Monday. Funeral services were held at the home Thursday and later at St. Paul's Lutheran church in German township where the remains were laid to rest.

The deceased was born in German township, Grundy county, and resided there all of his life. He was twenty-eight years old. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter VanderWerf, early residents of northwest Grundy. The father died about twelve years ago. Mr. VanderWerf was married three years ago to Miss Gepke Ascher, who survives him. A child born to this union a number of months ago died in infancy. The VanderWerf family the past year have been living on the place formerly known as the Freed farm two miles south of the Third Avenue service station.
