Mrs. Haren, Iowa's Oldest, Dies Here

Mrs. Minnie Haren, 109, Iowa's oldest resident, died Tuesday night at Countryside Nursing Home in Grundy Center where she had made her home the past 26 months.

Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Ferree Funeral Home, with Rev. E. H. Buschman officiating. Burial will be in the Grundy Center cemetery.

Minnie Roose Haren was born November 12, 1855, in Germany and came to this country with her parents 103 years ago.

The Roose family lived a few years at Freeport, Ill., before moving to Grundy county, where they homesteaded a farm in Pleasant Valley township.

She was united in marriage to Harm Haren in 1878. The couple settled on a farm 3 1/2 miles west of Grundy Center in Palermo township.

After her husband's death in 1918, Mrs. Haren continued to reside on the family farm for another 26 years before she moved to Grundy Center to make her home with a daughter, Mrs. Ella Mathern.

Despite her advanced age, Mrs. Haren was a hardy, quick-witted woman with a marvelous memory. Until recent months she kept abreast the times by reading, newspapers, her eyesight was remarkably good, and she was able to converse about current events as well as things that had happened a century ago.

She became a resident of Countryside Nursing Home on January 11, 1963, where she passed away early Tuesday evening.

She is survived by eight children, including four sons and four daughters. They are Claus, Otto and Hubert Haren of Grundy Center, and Henry Haren of Manchester, Mrs. J. D. Meester and Mrs. Mervin Baughman of Grundy Center, Mrs. Mathern of Waterloo, and Mrs. Charles Stevens, Hastings, Minn.

Also surviving are 27 grandchildren, 74 great-grandchildren and eleven great-great-grandchildren.
