Reemt Klaas Harken died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Abram Roelse at Ackley Thursday, May 19th, from old age. He was 88 years old.
He was born on December 21, 1839, in East Friesland, Germany. When he was thirty years of age, he migrated to the United States and settled in the neighborhood of Freeport, Ill. After fourteen years of activity there he moved with his family to Aplington, locating on a farm south of Austinville. In 1873 he was united in marriage to Anna Hayenga, and their home was blessed with ten children, three of whom died in infancy. His wife preceded him in death, July, 1919. Since that time he made his home with his children, Mr. and Mrs. A. Roelse. There remain to mourn him his children, Klaas, Mrs. Abram Roelse, Ben, John, Mrs. Wm. Muller, Isbrant and Corneal, besides seventeen grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.
The funeral services were held on Monday, May 23, at the West Friesland church, of which he had been a member for forty-five years and served the congregation forty-two years as elder.
