Mrs. B. F. Mertz Is Called

Another Pioneer Passes Away at a Ripe Old Age

Mrs. B. F. Mertz died at her home in the east part of town at 8:30 on Wednesday morning, April 27th, 1927, at the age of 88 years, 1 month and 5 days.

Grandma Mertz, as she was familiarly known by her many friends and neighbors, had been in poor health for several years.

Amanda Klingaman was born March 22nd, 1839, in Pennsylvania. She was married to B. F. Mertz, March 19th, 1857. Mr. Mertz preceded her in death March 14th, 1908.

In 1860 they moved to Ohio where they remained for four or five years, coming to Iowa about 1878, and she has lived here since.

Mrs. Mertz was a member of the Congregational church for a number of years.

To this union were born seven children, one of whom died in infancy. The others are William, of Marshalltown; James, of Webster City; Elmer and Mrs. R. E. Gottsch, of this city; Mrs. R. W. Page, of Waterloo; and Mrs. D. Cohn, of Peoria, Ill.

Grandma Mertz was a most generous woman and was the happiest when she was doing something for others. Her home was also the home of some of her grandchildren and by them as well as by the other relatives, friends and neighbors she will be greatly missed, but her loving kindness will remain in their memory for all time.

Funeral services will be held at her late home, 206 G Avenue, on Friday afternoon at two o'clock, Rev. Winslow, of the M.E. church, officiating. Interment will be in the family lot in the Grundy Center cemetery.
