Whitten Woman, 101, Is Dead

Mrs. Prudence Hathaway, one of the oldest persons in central Iowa, died at her home in Whitten last Friday. If she had lived until the coming month of May, she would have been 101 years old. There was a private funeral service with burial in the Benson cemetery.

Mrs. Hathaway was born in Marshfield, Mo., May 14th, 1850, and she grew up and married there. She lived where there was divided sentiment as between the North and the South. Her family was on the side of the Union and Mrs. Hathaway's father served four years in the Union army. At one time the rebels took all of their livestock except two chickens.

In 1880 Mrs. Hathaway and her husband, Millard Hathaway, moved to Iowa. They lived near Iowa Falls four years, after which they moved to a farm east of Whitten in Felix township, Grundy county. The couple moved to Whitten in 1926. The husband died in 1941 at the age of 82. Mrs. Hathaway's daughter, Mrs. Clara Harris had been living with her mother up to the time of her death. Mrs. Fred Humphrey lives in Des Moines. She has two sisters living; one of these is 81 and the other is 86.
