James Bates Died

James Helemn, son of Mary Elizabeth and Augustus Henry Bates, was born July 21, 1872, on a farm near Gilman. Here he grew to young manhood, living near the Laurel and Kellogg communities. On Aug. 28, 1896, he was married at Marshalltown to Effie Dena Nakken, the latter from the Laurel community. They started housekeeping on a farm near Kellogg. Later they farmed near Marshalltown and Gilman, coming to Conrad in 1918 where he lived until 1941. At this time they purchased a small acreage at Gilman which was his home until his death.

Preceding him in death were his wife in 1948; one daughter Josie in 1920 and a daughter in infancy.

Two children survive, a son Harvey Bates of State Center and a daughter, Mrs. Clarence (Ethel) Nason of Conrad; 6 grandchildren: Charles, Carol Ann and Dean Bates and Donald, Eileen and Kenneth Nason.

Mr. Bates died at the University hospital at Iowa City as a result of perforated ulcers.

Funeral services were at the Methodist church in Gilman on Wednesday afternoon. The services were conducted by Rev. Corwin Taylor and Rev. Nelson Murdock. Burial was in the Conrad cemetery.
