Joe Hempen Dies Last Friday

Joe Hempen died at his home in Grundy Center last Friday. He had been in failing health the past four and a half years. He suffered a paralytic stroke ten days before his death which hastened the end. He was 72 years old.

Funeral services were held at the Engelkes Funeral Home at 1 o'clock Monday, and later at the Bethany Presbyterian church with Rev. F. J. Langenberg officiating. Burial was in the cemetery at Lincoln Center.

Mr. Hempen was a native of Germany. He was born April 21, 1878, in Petgum, Eastfriesland, Germany. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Hempke Hempen. He came to this country with his parents in 1885. They located on a farm in Lincoln township where the parents died.

In 1905 he was married to Rena Saathoff and the couple spent their married life together on a farm in Lincoln township. The wife died in 1925. On June 20th, 1930, Mr. Hempen was married a second time to Mrs. Dena Miller. The couple lived on the home farm in Lincoln township until they moved to Grundy Center in 1939.

Surviving are the wife; two sons, Herman from Grundy Center and Albert from Dike; two daughters, Mrs. Anton Emkes from Fredericksburg and Mrs. John Kruger, Dike; one stepdaughter, Mrs. Herman Wiese, Martelle, Iowa. There are 14 grandchildren and one step-grandchild.
