Dr. D. C. Steelsmith Dies Sunday After Heart Attack
Dr. D. C. Steelsmith, who was born and grew up in the vicinity of Conrad, died Sunday in the Lutheran hospital in Des Moines. Dr. and Mrs. Steelsmith, who the past six years had made their home at Liscomb, returned recently from Florida where they spent the winter. They went to Des Moines Thursday to visit their daughter, Mrs. Crumm. The next morning the doctor was stricken with a heart attack and taken to the hospital. He was 72 years old.
Dr. Steelsmith was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. M. H. Steelsmith, who came from Ohio in 1866 and located on a farm in Felix township where the Doctor was born. He attended medical school in Iowa City and received his degree in 1902. For 14 years he practiced his profession at Melvin, Iowa. While living there he was elected to serve two terms in the state legislature from Osceola county. The elections were in 1912 and 1914.
In 1918 he received his degree in public health from Harvard university. He was instructor in public health at the Iowa University for a year, after which he became commissioner of health at Dubuque where he served seven years. After that he went to Des Moines to become deputy state commissioner of public health and following the death of Dr. Albert he was made head of the state department.
Dr. and Mrs. Steelsmith maintained a home at Liscomb the past fifteen years and when he retired six years ago they moved to their Liscomb home.
Services were held in the Christian church at Liscomb Wednesday afternoon. Burial was in the Conrad cemetery.
