Joan Lois Beenken, 79 of Wellsburg, Iowa passed away May 10, 2012 at her home in Wellsburg. Services are being held privately by the family at a later date. Memorials may be directed to the family or the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation.

Joan was born on November 29, 1932 in Ackley, Iowa; the daughter of Joe and Jeanne Abbas. She was raised on the family farm in Ackley and graduated from the Ackley High School.

She was married to Marlyn Meyer and together they welcomed four children into their family. Joan was later married to Chuck Beenken and they enjoyed many wonderful years together until his death on December 31, 1999.

Joan worked for the Grundy County Sheriff's Department for several years. Joan then opened Zeno's Pizza in Grundy Center. Years later she sold the business and moved to Bentonville Arkansas; there she worked for the Tyson Food Company until her retirement. In 2007 Joan moved back to Wellsburg in order to be near her family.

Joan is survived by her children, Marva (Mike) Stephenson of Marion, Iowa, Sue (David) Aytes of Orange, Texas, Myles (Julie) Meyer of Wellsburg, Iowa and Shelly Doyle of Waterloo, Iowa; grandchildren, Kary Doyle, Clint and Corey Stephenson, Dawn Kruger and Josh Meyer; 7 great-grandchildren; sisters Doris (Maynard) Petersen of Dike, Iowa, Nedra (Marvin) Harms of Ames, Iowa and Elma Raisch of Hampton, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Chuck Beenken; brother Marvin Abbas; sister Judy Bieghler; son-in-law Darrell Owens and granddaughter Mandy Owens.
