Former Grundy Resident Dies at Aplington

Kasper Arends was born Nov. 16, 1859, in Eastfriesland, Germany. In 1865 he came with his parents to the United States and lived first at Forreston, Ill. After a short stay of six months the family moved to Grundy county, Iowa, living the greater part of the time in German township.

He was married in 1883 to Miss Clara Ulfers. To this union were born five children, two of whom preceded him in death, one in infancy and Gertie, who passed away in 1919, death being caused thru auto accident. His wife he lost in January, 1896. In the late fall of the same year he was united in marriage to Miss Henriette Siefkes, and to this union were born four children.

Mr. Arends was always a farmer by occupation, until a few years ago when he purchased his present residence in Aplington.

In the early days of 1924 he fell victim to an apparently incurable disease. Thru medical skill and faithful attendance he was sufficiently restored and for a while it seemed as if he was entirely on the road to recovery. But in the beginning of this year the tide turned, gradually he became weaker and at last he was failing rapidly. Without physical pain or suffering he passed away on April 22, 1925, at his home in Aplington, at the age of 65 years, 5 months and 6 days.

There remain to mourn his departure his wife, his children, Mrs. C. Sloan of Aplington, Arend of Wellsburg, Harry of Eldora, Henry, Mrs. H. Wintercoes of Everly, Iowa; Kasper and John, eight grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Dick Arends of Hill City, Minn., and Mrs. Harm Winterboer, of Everly, Iowa, besides many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services which were largely attended took place on Saturday, April 26, 1925. Rev. Johnson of the Westfriesland church officiated, assisted by Rev. Zindler, Rev. Schnucker and Rev. Campbell.

Interment was made in the cemetery adjoining the church of which he had been a member for a long time.

Those from out-of-town attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Winterboer, Everly, Iowa, Mrs. D. A. Arends, Hill City, Minn., Mr. and Mrs. Dick Siefkens, Windom, Minn., Mr. and Mrs. Juren Raske and son, Henry and Jurna, of Renville, Minn., Mrs. Sam Tjaden, Mrs. Harm Neymeyer, Mr. Art Ulfers and Mr. Jake vanHove, Chancellor, S. Dak.; Mrs. John Heikens and Mrs. Richard Heikens, Spencer; A. J. Arends, Blairsburg, and Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Tebben, Carnarvon.
