"Darkey" Charley Dead

Charley Merrill, who since the civil war times has been a well known character about Reinbeck, passed away at the hospital at Independence last week Thursday.

Two or three years ago Merrill was brought to the county farm where he remained until two months ago when he was transferred to the state institution at Independence.

"Charley Darkey", as he was familiarly known in and around Reinbeck, was brought north after the war by a soldier residing at Reinbeck and he continued to make that place his home ever since. In some ways he was an eccentric character, but he was a great friend of the children and with all his peculiarities was a harmless individual.

His service was held at the masonic temple there Saturday and was largely attended.
