Menne Bakker Passes Away

Pioneer Resident of Grundy County Goes to His Reward

Menne Bakker died at his home in this city at one o'clock yesterday afternoon. General debility due to old age was the cause of his death. He took to his bed two months ago and failed gradually until the end came.

Mr. Bakker was 86 years old. He came to this county about fifty years ago and resided here continually up to the time of his death. He for many years resided on his farm in Lincoln township. He and his wife moved to town about fifteen years ago. The wife died three years ago.

Funeral services will be held at the home at one o'clock next Saturday and later at the German Presbyterian church.

Mr. Bakker's obituary will be published in the next issue of this paper.

Obituary of Menne Bakker

Menne Bakker was born April 30, 1838 in Emden, Ostfriesland, Germany. In 1866 he came to America and settled at Ridott, Ill.

In the spring of 1868 he was united in marriage to Miss Gretje Dieken. This union was blessed with seven children. The first born, a boy, died in infancy.

In 1874 he moved with his family to this vicinity and it has been their home since.

About eighteen years ago Mr. and Mrs. Bakker retired from farm life and moved to Grundy Center, where he made his home till death.

July 23, 1911, he joined the German Presbyterian church, of this city, and on Jan. 21, 1912, was elected as Elder in which office he served until 1919.

His helpmate preceded him in death about 3 years ago. He died Oct. 8, 1924, at the age of 86 years, 5 months and 8 days.

He leaves to mourn his departure three sons and three daughters: Mrs. Tillie Balsam, Stewartsville, Minn.; Walter M.; Mrs. J. Petersen, Maggie, George and Menne and their families, all of Grundy Center; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, besides other relatives and many friends.
