Old Resident Dies at Beaman
Marie Theresa Schrafel, daughter of Wenzel and Theresa Schrafel, was born in the old country on June 29, 1860, and died at the St. Thomas hospital on Thursday morning, Sept. 25, 1924, aged 64 years, 2 months and 26 days.
She came to this country thirty-six years ago and located near Beaman, where she met and married William Flanders at Grundy Center on Sept. 18, 1890.
Mrs. Flanders is survived by her husband and four step-children, four sisters and two brothers. The children are Mrs. Maude Courtney, Collier, Kans.; Mrs. Lewis Glass, Beaman; Mrs. C. E. Bonk, George, Iowa; Edwin Flanders, of Canada. The sisters and brothers are Mrs. Caroline Hotopp, of Beaman; Mrs. T. Smoranz, Reinbeck; Mrs. J. Mannen, Buckingham; Mrs. R. E. Hanisch, Grundy Center; W. A. Schrafel, Austin, Minn.; and Joe Schrafel of Shell Rock, besides other near relatives.
Mrs. Flanders was born and reared in the Catholic faith, to which she adhered till the time of her death, observing at her last illness these religious ceremonies practiced by her church.
She has been known as an industrious and dependable woman always faithful to those trusts invested in her. She was a dutiful wife and mother and her death brings grief to those who knew her and the sympathy of the entire community.
Funeral services were held from the Beaman M.E. church Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. J. J. Snyder. Mesdames Fred Elliott and Ira Sanderson and Mr. Fred Bruene and Ben Rowe sang. Ed Cole, George Rowe, Charles Whorral, Gus ?, Robert and Ira Sanderson acted as pallbearers. Interment was made in Oakland cemetery.
