Alvador Pierce Long, the son of George and Charity Long, was born in Luzerne county, Penn., Aug. 25, 1854, and passed away at his home in Whitten, Iowa, August 20, 1924, at 9:50 p.m., being 69 years, 11 months and 25 days old. A lingering illness dates back to last fall and continued to his death.

In the fall of 1868 he came with his parents to Grundy county where they settled on the old homestead.

He was joined in wedlock to Minnie I. Gorham in June, 1879.

To them were born eight children, three of whom died in early childhood. The five who remain are: Frank Long, Sioux Falls, S.D.; Mabel Barnard, Whitten, Iowa; Edna Gray, Summit, S.D.; Ben H. Long, Barstow, Cal.; Velma Ree Long, Whitten, Iowa, who together with their mother mourn his decease.

His life was spent in this neighborhood since coming here in 1868. His father's family consisted of eleven children, all of whom grew to manhood and womanhood.

He was a charter member of the Modern Woodmen of America and also of the Homesteaders in the town of Whitten.

He was a patriotic, public-spirited citizen, taking an especial interest in every enterprise that built up the community from an educational and moral standpoint. The funeral services were conducted by Eugene Curless at the residence and the body was placed in the Benson cemetery.
