Con. Hillygus Passes Away

Well Known Young Man of Holland Succumbs to Operation

Cornelius Hillygus, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Bert Hillygus, living near Holland, died at the Iowa Falls hospital Wednesday night.

The young man was taken to the hospital a week ago last Saturday night where he was operated upon for an abscess of the stomach. His condition from the first was regarded as very serious and but little hopes of his recovery was entertained.

Cornelius was twenty-one years of age and a fine young man and his untimely death will bring sorrow to many home where he was known. He put up a strong fight for his life, but the odds were against him from the start.

The remains will be brought to Holland on this afternoon's train, but the funeral arrangements were not completed as we go to press.

Obituary of Cornelius Hillygus

Cornelius Hillygus, oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Bert Hillygus, who reside west of Holland, was born Oct. 26, 1903, in Grundy county, and died Wednesday, April 2nd, 1924, at 10 p.m., aged 20 years, six months and six days.

About two weeks prior to his death he was taken sick. It was deemed advisable to remove him to the hospital at Iowa Falls, where he was operated upon for ulcers of the stomach. His illness was so severe that almost from the beginning very little hope was entertained for his recovery. All that human skill and loving hands could do were of no avail. His end came quietly Wednesday evening, April 2nd, 1924, at 10 p.m.

He was of a quiet disposition and greatly loved by those who knew him. His untimely death, being only 20 years of age, was quite a shock to his loved ones and friends. He affiliated with the Christian Reformed church at Holland and repeated his faith in his Lord even up to the end. He is survived by his bereaved parents, five brothers, three sisters; Elizabeth (Mrs. John Peters), Herbert, Lee, Robert, Clara, Marion, Allen and Glenn, besides his aged grandfather, Mr. P. Poppenga, and other relatives and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held at Holland Monday, Profs. F. H. Wezeman and W. Bode in charge. Interment was at the Drake cemetery.
