Thomas John "T.J." Heronimus, 77, of Grundy Center, passed away on Thursday, August 28, 2014 at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center following a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, September 2nd at 10:30 A.M. at the Bethany Presbyterian Church, 315 G Ave., Grundy Center, IA with Pastor Jean Bower officiating. A memorial visitation will be held on Monday, September 1st from 4 to 7 P.M. at the Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center. Inurnment will follow the memorial service at the Rosehill Cemetery in Grundy Center. Memorials may be made in T.J.'s name to the American Cancer Society, The Grundy Center Community School District Foundation or to the family for distribution to other charitable organizations.

T.J. was born April 24, 1937 in Holland, Iowa, the son of Tom & Helen (Maas) Heronimus. He graduated from Grundy Center Community High School in 1955, and then received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Iowa in 1959 with a major in Political Science. He was also commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Infantry on the day of his graduation. While at Iowa he played drums in various dance bands and was also a percussionist in the Iowa Hawkeye Marching Band. After graduating from college, he attended Drake University Law School and received his Juris Doctor degree in 1962. He then entered military service and completed his tour of duty in 1964 with the rank of Captain. He started his Law practice in Grundy Center in association with Don Kliebenstein in November, 1964 and continued his practice until his death. He was a partner in the firm of Heronimus, Schmidt & Allen. T.J. served on many boards and commissions during his career including the Session of Bethany Presbyterian Church, the Grundy Center Library Board, Board of Directors of Farmers Savings Bank of Grundy Center (later Hawkeye Bancorporation), Board of Directors of Grundy National Bank of Grundy Center, State Board of Public Instruction, Board of Governors of the Iowa State Bar Association, Board of Counselors of Drake University Law School, Board of Directors of the Grundy Center Community School District, Board of Trustees of Grundy Center Community School District Foundation, Grievance Commission of the Iowa Supreme Court and Board of Professional Ethics and Conduct of the Iowa Supreme Court as well as many other Bar Association Committees. He also served one term as Grundy County Attorney. T.J. enjoyed traveling, gardening and reading. His favorite subjects were Biography with a concentration on European royalty and the life and times of Abraham Lincoln.

T.J. married Marcia Langenberg at Central Presbyterian Church in Des Moines in 1963. He is survived by his wife Marcia; two sons Jeffrey Thomas of Colorado Springs, CO and John Robert (Tiffany) of Denver, CO; one grandson Benjamin Thomas Heronimus, one step-grandson, Trevor Crounse Dahler and one granddaughter Sophia Noelle Heronimus.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Harold Dean Heronimus.
