Kenneth A. Havel, 81, of Grundy Center, passed away on Sunday, September 28, 2014 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 4, 2014 at 11:00 am at First Presbyterian Church in Grundy Center. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Saturday, October 4, 2014 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., at First Presbyterian Church in Grundy Center. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Grundy County Memorial Hospital or First Presbyterian Church both in Grundy Center.

Kenneth Anthony was born in Washington County, Iowa, on June 15, 1933, the son of Richard and Matilda (Lasek) Havel. He attended school in Washington, Iowa and graduated with the class of 1951. After graduation he went to work as a farm hand in the area. Kenneth joined the Army on April 24, 1953 serving his country during the Korean War. He was discharged from the Army on April 22, 1955.

Ken married Marlene Mayer on May 15, 1955 in Washington, Iowa. Ken then attended the University of Iowa and received his degree in accounting in 1958. He then worked for The Carnation Company in Waterloo, Mid-Equipment in Grundy Center and Whink Co. in Eldora. Ken and Marlene then owned and operated the Copper Inn in Grundy Center, where he also did catering. He continued catering after selling the restaurant. He worked for area car dealers as an accountant before becoming City Clerk for the city of Grundy Center, where he retired from.

Ken was a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church, Lions and the AMVETS 17 all of Grundy Center. Ken and Marlene enjoyed traveling all over the country. He enjoyed cooking, catering and attending sporting events of his own children and grandchildren.

Above all, spending time with family was what Ken treasured most.

Ken is survived by his wife Marlene of Grundy Center; children, Julie (Ray) Baltes of Hampton, Scott (Julie) Havel of Urbandale and Doug (Ann) Havel of Cedar Rapids; 6 grandchildren: Tommy Baltes, Jacob Havel, Jessica Havel, Briana Havel and Sarah Havel; brother, Norman (Jana) Havel of Prairie City) ; sister, Alma Lou (Paul) Tisinger of Iowa City; and many nieces and nephews.

Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Matilda Havel; grandson Jared Havel; brother Delbert Havel.
