Former Grant Twp. Man Dead
John McAvoy, a former Grant township farmer, died at his home in Elma, Ia., after having been sick less than an hour. Heart trouble was believed to have been the cause of his sudden death.
John McAvoy was born March 24, 1851, in Schnectady, N.Y., and came to Dubuque with his parents when a child and there grew to womanhood. In 1874 he settled on a farm near Reinbeck, Grundy county, Iowa, where on January 23, 1877, he was married to Miss Mary Murphy, who preceded him in death in 1885. To this union was born four children, three of whom are living: Mrs. Mary Keniry, Elma, Iowa; Wm. J., Charles City; Mrs. Anna Lonergan, Reinbeck, Iowa; two preceding him in death, John, who died in infancy and Mrs. Martha O'Connor who died in March, 1922.
On August 17, 1887, he was united in marriage to Annie B. Stevens at Cedar Falls, Iowa, who with three children born to this union, Edw. T., James T., Elizabeth C., all of Elma, live to mourn the loss of a loving husband and father.
He moved with his family to Elma, Iowa, in 1908, where he lived until the time of his death. Funeral services were held at 9:30 o'clock on Saturday, August 18th at the Immaculate Conception church at Elma. Rev. Fr. Farrelly officiating at a Requiem High Mass. The body was laid to rest in Calvary cemetery at Elma.
