Mr. A. R. Pratt was born in Broom county, N.Y., Jan. 25, 1914, and died in Grundy Center, Ia., Jan. 1st, 1900, nearly eighty-six years of age.

About the year 1837 Mr. Pratt moved to Illinois and settled in Peoria. Here he was united in marriage with Miss Juliet A. Pratt, January 2nd, 1840. Today, Jan 2nd, would have been the sixtieth anniversary of this marriage. To them were given six children, only one of whom, Mrs. H. K. Snavely, survives with her mother to mourn their loss. In 1854, Mr. Pratt moved to Iowa and settled in Marshalltown where he resided many years. About eight years ago, he and his wife came to Grundy Center to reside with their daughter, Mrs. Snavely.

In early life he was converted and united with the Methodist Episcopal church and continued in the faith of that church until death. He loved the Bible, read it through several times and rested on its promises. During his long and tedious illness he frequently expressed a desire and even prayed for his departure, and declared that he was ready to go. His wife and daughter waited and watched and did all that loving heart and hands could do. Others of the family assisted as far as they could in this loving service. Mr. Pratt passed away very quietly and peacefully about eight o'clock on New Year's day 1900.

Funeral services were conducted at the house by Dr. Fellows and the remains were laid at rest in the cemetery west of town.
