Services Thursday For Henry Schafer

Funeral services for Henry J. Schafer were held Thursday afternoon at Bethany Presbyterian church. The service was conducted by Rev. A. J. Straatmeyer. Burial was in the Grundy Center cemetery. The body was at the Engelkes funeral home up to the time of the church service.

Mr. Schafer died at the Veterans' hospital, Iowa City, Monday morning of last week. Death was due to pneumonia. He had been a patient in the Iowa City hospital for nine months. Prior to that he was a patient in Veterans hospital, Des Moines, several years. His health was not good since 1936, when he was injured in an accident. As a result of that accident he had one of his legs amputated at the Veterans Hospital, Des Moines, a few years later.

Henry Schafer was born on a farm near Wellsburg, April 22nd, 1898. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. John Schafer. He grew up in the Wellsburg vicinity and on January 23, 1929, he was married to Minnie Siebrands. The couple resided on farms in the Wellsburg-Holland vicinity until he suffered his injury, after which they moved to Grundy Center, which remained their home. He was a veteran of World War I.

Surviving are the wife and three children. The children are Mrs. Kenneth Rhoads, Mrs. Edward Ubben, and Hilko Schafer, all of Grundy Center. There are five grandchildren, two sisters, Miss Jennie Schafer, Wellsburg, and Mrs. Carl Madsen, Hubbard, Iowa.
