George Arends Buried Here

Funeral services for George Arends, 86, who died June 9 at Covina, Calif., were held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Eastfriesland Presbyterian church. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Mr. Arends died at a hospital in Covina, where he had been a patient following a fall in which he suffered a fractured hip.

He was born south of Ackley June 1, 1867, and had farmed in this vicinity until 20 years ago when he went to California. Since then he and his wife returned to Ackley for the summer months to attend to farm interests and visit with relatives.

Mr. Arends was married twice. His first wife was Gertie Burma, who died about 55 years ago. He was married in October, 1901, to Dena Tegtmeyer, who survives. Also surviving are a son, Dick, of Uba City, Calif., by his first marriage; and another daughter, Mrs. Merle Smucker of Covina, Calif., by his second marriage. There are also several grandchildren.

Mrs. Arends and Mrs. Smucker arrived from California on Wednesday for the services.

Obituary of George Arends

George Arends, youngest son of the pioneer family of Arend and Elske Arends, was born on June 1, 1867. After an illness of ten weeks he passed away at the hospital near Covina, California on June 9, 1953 at the age of 86 years and 8 days.

In October 1889 he was united in marriage to Gretje Burma, who preceded him in death in March, 1899.

On October, 30, 1901 he was again united in marriage to Geraldine Tegtmeyer. It was their privilege to observe their Golden Wedding anniversary on October 30, 1951.

The departed is survived by the bereaved widow and daughters, Alice and Marguriete and son, Dick Arends; also seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Mr. Arends remained a lifelong member of the church. His parents were instrumental in organizing the Eastfriesland Presbyterian church, Ackley, Iowa.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, June 17, at 1:30 at Brandt's Funeral Home and later at the East Friesland Presbyterian church, Ackley, Ia. Interment was in the cemetery adjoining the church. Rev. C. F. Siemsen officiated, assisted by Rev. V. Kampman of Meservey, Ia.
