Richard Schmidt Dies Following Stroke

Richard Schmidt died at his home in Wellsburg at 10:40 Saturday night following a stroke of paralysis on Tuesday of last week. The stroke rendered him unconscious and he was unable to come out of the coma before the end came. He and his wife had been visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Helmer Molendorp north of town and they returned home at ten in the evening. He was stricken shortly after while seated in a chair. He suffered his first stroke six years ago which left him partially disabled. He was 54 years old.

Funeral services were held at the home at one o'clock on Tuesday and later at the Reformed church in Wellsburg. Rev. C. Swyter from Steamboat Rock was the officiating pastor. Burial was in the cemetery adjoining the church.

Richard Schmidt was born in Berlin, Germany, Oct. 20, 1891. He came to America in 1913 and during the first year he resided in Hampton. In 1914 he came to Stout where he opened a blacksmith shop. He operated the shop at Stout until 1923 when he sold out and moved to Wellsburg where he started a blacksmith shop. He conducted his shop in Wellsburg until he was stricken for the first time. He was unable to carry on the work later and sold his equipment but kept the building. For a short time after that he and his wife operated a lunch counter in Wellsburg. The past few years he was the local agent for a seed corn company.

On January 9, 1918, he was married to Miss Vina Kalkwarf of Beaver township. The ceremony was performed by Rev. E. J. Voss, who was pastor of Salem Lutheran church in Beaver township at that time. The couple began housekeeping at Stout.

Surviving are the wife, two sons and four daughters. The sons are William R. and Richard. The daughters are Mrs. Don Ross, of Wellsburg; Mrs. Floyd Senning, Grundy Center; Nadine Schmidt, Huntington Park, California; and Elaine, who graduated with this year's class in the Wellsburg high school.
