Carl J. Schmidt Dies Monday From Cancer

Carl J. Schmidt died at his home Monday afternoon. He had been in failing health a little more than a year. He went to the hospital at Marshalltown a few months ago where his trouble was found to be cancer.

Funeral services will be held at the home at 1:30 Thursday afternoon and later at the Reformed church in Wellsburg with Rev. Wm. Landsiedel officiating. Burial will be in the cemetery adjoining the church.

Had he lived until the 27th of September, Carl Schmidt would have been 76 years old. He was born in Ostfriesland, Germany. He came to America with his father and mother, three brothers and one sister in 1876. The family came to Grundy county and for many years made their home on a farm in Colfax township. Four years after they came here they bought what is known as the Quick farm and that has remained in the Schmidt family ever since.

Carl Schmidt and Lena Snittjer were married on March 21, 1894. The first two years after his marriage he devoted much of his time to carpenter work with his brother George. After that he devoted himself to farming. He rented a few years, after which he bought the farm in Colfax township that he owned at the time of his death. Nine years ago he built a fine residence property in Wellsburg and he and his wife came here to live in ease and comfort among old friends and near relatives.

Surviving are the wife, three sons and one daughter. The oldest son died several years ago. The sons are John, living at Reinbeck, Leonard, who is on the home farm, and George, who is farming in Colfax township. The one daughter, Mrs. Charles Claus, lives at Peoria, Ill. There are four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Only two brothers of the Schmidt family who came here 65 years ago are now living. They are George of Holland and Fred from Blunt, South Dakota.
