Henry Ascher Sr. Funeral Services Held On Friday

Funeral services for Henry Ascher Sr., 84, long time Grundy county resident, were held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Doyen Funeral Home and at 1:30 p.m. at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran church, northeast of Wellsburg.

Rev. Peter Larsen officiated the service. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Special music for the service was given by a mixed chorus consisting of Mrs. Henry Huisman, Mrs. Elwood Doyen, Eldon Harms and Darrell Koch. Organist was Mrs. Frank Meyeraan Jr. Flower attendants were Mrs. Folkert Boelman and Mrs. Clarence Bergman.

Casket bearers were Calvin Kannegieter, Elmer Bergman, David Avery, Louis Hoffman, Herman Walters and Arthur Miller.

Henry Ascher Sr. passed away January 10 around 11 a.m. at his home south of Aplington. Cause of death was complications of influenza.

Henry Ascher Sr. was born to Mr. and Mrs. August Ascher on November 30, 1880 on a farm near Freeport, Illinois. He reached the age of 84 years, one month and 10 days. He traveled with his family to Grundy county in 1882.

Mr. Ascher received his education in a rural school in Shiloh township. On Oct. 2, 1900 he married Hattie Maas. This marriage was blessed with five sons and four daughters. They spent their entire married life together on various farms in this county. In 1942 they moved to the farm near Buck Grove in Pleasant Valley township, where Mr. Ascher has lived since that time.

Henry Ascher Sr. was baptised into the Christian church and he was confirmed at St. Paul's Evangelical Luth. church April 1, 1895. He has been an active communing member of the church.

He is survived by four sons and four daughters: John Ascher, Clarksville; Henry Ascher, Jr., Wellsburg; Florence, Mrs. Chris Finke, Wellsburg; Tena, Mrs. Roy Riekena, Spokane, Washington; Miss Hattie Ascher, at home; Harry Ascher, Grundy Center; Peter Ascher, at home; Mildred, Mrs. Harold Purvis, Iowa Falls.

Also surviving: one sister, Mrs. Minnie Harrenstein of Greene and 16 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one son, August, three grandsons, one brother and four sisters.
