Rites Held For Joe von Aswege

Joe H. von Aswege, 77, of Hampton, formerly of Grundy Center, passed away Wednesday, January 9, at home.

Services were held Saturday, January 12, at 10:30 a.m. in the Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center, with Rev. Calvin W. Vanderwerf officiating.

Casket bearers were Ray Bloom, Uwe Klasse, Ron Leibold and John Aswegan.

Military graveside rites were held by American Legion Post #349 and Amvets #17. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery in Grundy Center.

Joe, the son of Hinrich and Lina von Aswege, was born on July 9, 1913, in Grundy county. He received his education in Beaver Township Country school. Joe was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, beginning on December 16, 1942, attached to the 37th Combat Engineers. He received his basic training at Camp Beale in California before his unit was sent overseas, serving in Rhineland, Germany, and Normandy, France, during his enlistment. He earned many medals including four bronze stars and the purple heart. He was honorably discharged from the service on November 9, 1945.

On March 30, 1952, he was united in marriage to Berta Bloem Hoppmann at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Parkersburg. They farmed in Grundy county until 1976, when they retired and moved to Hampton.

Preceding him in death were his parents; five brothers; two sisters and one infant sister.

Surviving Joe are his wife, Berta; one son, Ewald and his wife Korina of Liberty, MO; and one grandson Everett.

A memorial fund has been established.

The Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home was in charge of professional arrangements.
