Henry Geiken Dies From Cancer

Geike Henry Geiken was born on June 8, 1882, at Wiebelsum, Eastfriesland, Germany. His parents were Henry Geiken and Anna Lauterbach. He came to America at the age of 10 years, settling in the vicinity of Austinville, Ia. He spent all his life in this community except an interval of seven years during which time he resided with his family at Chancellor, S.D.

On February 20, 1908 he was united in marriage to Alma Deters. Their union was blessed with five children, two sons and three daughters.

Last year his health began to fail and on May 6, he went to the hospital at Iowa Falls where he underwent an operation on May 13. The operation revealed that he was afflicted with cancer and that his case was hopeless.

After a stay of about four weeks at the hospital he was brought home, where he was bedfast during many weeks until the early hours of Thursday, July 28, when death released him from his suffering.

He attained the age of 56 years, 1 month and 20 days. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1934, his father in 1900 and his mother in 1935, and also two sisters, Mrs. Harmke Leiser and Edith Geiken.

He is survived by his children: Henry, Mrs. Gladys Mennen, Lucille, Willard and Marlys, all of whom are at home expect Mrs. Mennen; five grandchildren, a step-father, five sisters, Mrs. Ida Reed, Mrs. Gertie Mittlestadt, Mrs. Minnie Fessler, all of Iowa Falls, Mrs. Katie Deters of Ackley and Mrs. Dena Caine of Maywood, Calif., and also three step-brothers, Folkert, John and Casper Cooper and a step-sister, besides other relatives and many friends.

The funeral was held Saturday at 1 o'clock at the home and later at the Reformed church with the pastor, Rev. Henry Pannkuk, in charge assisted by Rev. Henry Johnson of Ackley. The body was laid to rest next to his wife on the Westfriesland Presbyterian church cemetery southeast of Ackley.
