Geo. E. Harms, Former Holland Businessman, Dies

Services for George E. Harms, 67, a former Holland businessman who died last Wednesday at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital following a heart attack at his home were held Saturday afternoon at the Colfax Center Presbyterian Church.

Rev. Jerry Van Curler officiated at the services. Burial was in the Colfax Center cemetery. Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

George E. Harms was born Jan. 3, 1906 in Shiloh township, Grundy County, the son of John and Charlotte Koch Harms. He was baptized and confirmed in St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Shiloh township.

He married Berdene Kruger on Dec. 18, 1929 in Colfax township. After their marriage they farmed in Shiloh township until 1949 when they moved to Holland. He was the owner of Harms Hardware in Holland from 1949 to 1964 when he semi-retired.

He was a member of the Colfax Center Presbyterian Church and held several offices in the church. He was also a member of the Holland Community Club.

His survivors include his wife Berdene; two sons, Bernerd of Wellsburg and Garyld of St. Paul, Minn.; one daughter, Mrs. Duane (Erna) Toomsen, Des Moines; two brothers, Ibeling Harms of Wellsburg and Will Harms of Eldora; three sisters, Mrs. Minnie Olsen of Goldfield, Mrs. George (Charlotte) Getting of Steamboat Rock and Mrs. Frank (Lydia) Meyeraan, Wellsburg; and 10 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one sister.
